The truth? Because all of her girlfriends have one. Because it shows what every girl knows about every guy and what every guy knows about every girl- that the time comes when you just got to make the commitment. After all the dating, the narrowing down of the field and the following of innate courtship rituals it’s time to move to the next step: the proposal.

If you have done it right up to this point the proposal unfolds as a very natural event with you on bended knee opening the velvet box that holds the symbol of your commitment – the Diamond of Forever. Few moments in life will ever approach this one.

If you have not been thoughtful and diligent through the dating and selection phase of mate choosing, then for heaven’s sake don’t spring a YouTube proposal on an unsuspecting date only to have her slap your teeth out on national T.V. and dash for the nearest exit. You didn’t even have the diamond. What were you thinking?

It always comes down to the diamond. If you’re Mr. Right, then now you must enter the uncharted waters of diamond buying. And unless you come from money, have money or know someone who will give you the money then you would do well to heed my advice, my novice neophyte.

First things first; and the first thing you must do is learn a little something about diamonds. After over thirty years in the “love business” as my first boss called it, being a jeweler has taught me a few things about diamonds. At this stage some personal investigation and education will pay big dividends in this process of procurement.

If you type in the word “diamond” into your browser you will get a plethora of information on diamonds; loose diamonds, diamond engagement rings, diamond ear rings, bracelets, pendants and on and on it goes. Much of the information is sales driven, some is designed to teach you the specifics of diamond buying -the 4 C’s: cut, color, clarity and carat weight. These are important. You need to know them, their relation to one another and how they help set price. It is by this criterion that these technical issues will help you determine what is not only right for her, but right for you as well.

Cut of course is just simply the cut of the diamond. Does she like a round diamond? A princess cut, perhaps….certainly the rage for today’s modern bride. How about a pear shape or a marquise cut? You can even get an oval, heart or some other exotic cut not part of the mainstream.

Color is a scale that helps define the overall body color of a diamond. D, E, F are colorless ranges. G, H, I are the white ranges. And J, K, L start the yellow ranges. There are other diamonds that go into the fancy color ranges like Canary, Champagne, and Cognac up to the much, much rarer blues and the extremely rare reds. In today’s world, color can be imparted onto diamonds such as a surface diffusion treatment or the entire diamond body color can be changed through irradiation. Not necessarily a bad thing but a thing that must be disclosed to you the buyer. A whopping 99% stay with the D thru L range – predominately in the G,H,I. and that’s pretty much where you want to stay, too. Typically, a diamond is never enhanced in these ranges either.

Clarity defines the internal inclusions and or surface blemishes that a diamond may have under 10 x (power) magnification. This is actually FTC defined. These inclusions are uncrystallized diamond or carbon seen as tiny black spots in the diamond itself or they can be white like gas or air pockets or they can even be tiny fractures called feathers. Obviously, a feather is not a huge crack that goes from side to side across the diamond. That would be someone else’s stone, not yours.

Carat Weight is pretty straight forward. How much does it weigh? Over 1 carat? Under? There are 100 points to a carat like pennies to a dollar. A half cart is 50 points, a quarter 25 points and so on. Diamonds rarely are cut right on “the point”, like say a 1 carat dead on. Usually a one carat would be a.94 up to a 1.07 carat. Weight and size pretty much go hand in hand. Of course, all things being equal the bigger the diamond, the bigger the price. Believe it.

Now comes the really important part, “How much is it?”

You casually stroll into your local jewelry store and after a cursory glance into the jewelry case the twinkle of a diamond catches your eye. You ask, “How much is that one?”

The jeweler carefully removes it and in one motion it is starring you right in the face. The jeweler enthusiastically replies, “Five thousand dollars.”

Your heart promptly starts racing and you nervously give out a trilled whistle informing the jeweler, “That’s a little out of my budget.” Quickly pointing to another one you ask, “How much is that one?”

The jeweler gives a deadpan reply, “That one is two whistles.”

Price, of course is always a factor. You may inherit a diamond but, if you buy one, somebody is going to make money; you just don’t want them to make it all off of you. Profit is not a bad word. Capitalism works. And that’s okay. You just want to pay a fair price for a good product.

Now duly armed with this powerful insider industry information you are now ready to go forth and acquire for your future princess the bauble of her dreams. Right? Wrong.

All you simply have done is to quench your intellectual thirst. You are no more ready to buy this girl a diamond then you are to beat the house at Black Jack after reading the latest “How I Got Rich Counting Cards in Vegas” book.

Sure you know some of the nomenclature of the business so at least you have some working idea of what is being said. But, what you don’t have is the years of experience of the subtle nuances that can truly define what kind of diamond you really have and how to value it. Frankly, you are going to have to find a jeweler you trust. It shouldn’t be too, hard.

Like any other business, a jewelry stores reputation precedes itself. After a little due diligence in this area (like where do smart people buy their diamonds) you shouldn’t have much problem in settling into one that you can trust.

It has taken literally eons for a diamond to form. It truly is one of nature’s finest phenomena’s. It will wait on you a little longer while you take the time to gather the really important information.

What is that information you ask?

Let me shotgun a few things at you:

Does she like gold or platinum? If gold, does she like white or yellow; 14 karat or 18 karat? (Don’t confuse carat and karat. Carat for diamond is a weight. Karat for gold is a mixture – an alloy by volume to be more precise. Gold can not be more then 24 karat, that’s the rule. Just trust it.)

What shape diamond does she like? What size does she prefer? Young brides today like a 1 carat princess cut. The next generation will like something different. It comes in a cycle. Round is the perennial favorite forever…..amen.

Does she want a simple mounting to hold the diamond with say four or six prongs? Or, does she really, really want an engagement ring filled with small diamonds that gives a kind of antique look? Does she want a 1 carat princess cut diamond set in an 18 karat white gold micro-pave’ semi-mounting?

How about a wedding band? Remember the cycle – proposal, engagement and then marriage. Not all of today’s engagement rings are made to fit with a wedding band. In fact, many brides just forgo the wedding band in favor of a larger diamond semi-mounting. If she is not one of them, then either you have a wedding band custom made or you pick out a matching set that has both an engagement ring and wedding band. Some even have the men’s wedding band included.

Do you know what size she wears? The standard size is a six. This is kind of optional information. Most jewelers can size it to fit after the fact. However, if she has exceptionally large fingers or small ones this could be a deal killer. The ring might not take the stress. Now it just got a little more complicated. Best to ask your jeweler before you buy. In fact, it is best to know her ring size. Just saying…..

Wow, all this and we haven’t even begun looking at diamonds yet. But, equipped with the 4 C’s and her preferences give you a huge leg up on the guy who just stumbles into a Louisville jewelry store and reticently announces that “I want to buy a diamond.” Who is that guy, anyway? Not you, to be sure.

You are the confident guy with a sure step. You walk in and inform the jeweler that you are looking for a princess cut diamond engagement ring. As the jeweler shows you his different styles you let your eyes do their work. Does it sparkle enough? Is there one that has more flash and brilliance then another? Let the jeweler show you his best stones and tell you about the cut, color, clarity and carat weight. How much is it? How do others compare to it? In order to keep it within your budget (and you need to have an idea of your price – your internet search should have helped you with this) can you trade color for clarity and still get size?

This is the point where you roll up your sleeves and get down to it. Generally speaking, the more the twinkle, the more the jingle. However, you don’t want a diamond with a big old bugger right dead in the top center of it. Inclusions are a necessary part of it. You just want the one where the inclusions are just not painfully obvious to the naked eye or that detract from the natural beauty of the diamond. Unless you are set on a diamond that is flawless and colorless in which case, make sure you bring your platinum card, the one that won’t catch fire when they run it.

If you truly are Mr. Right, then the process of buying her that special diamond will be a privilege. You are to be congratulated not on finding the diamond but, on finding the person with whom you truly want to spend the rest of your life with. The diamond is the tangible symbol to the entire world that this is your one and only beloved. And, if you carefully and thoughtfully pick the right diamond it will hold a lifetime of your memories together.

My friend recommended a car rental shop when my family and I planned a vacation out of town. It was an option for us since we don’t own a car back then. I didn’t regret renting one because it was an experience and now I know that it is more convenient.
