This article is about “Cream of tartar side effect”, we hope to bring more articles about “Cream of tartar side effect” in the near future:

When it is crunch time in the kitchen, running out of a crucial ingredient is no picnic. Neither is running out to the store at midnight. If you are missing an ingredient knowing its “equivalent” or substitution can save the day. Adapting recipes from antique cookbooks can also cause confusion. What is arrowroot and must I consult a wizard? Today, Mom helps cooks with tips on milk, cream and other sauce thickeners.

Milk: If you do not have one cup of fresh milk substitute 1/2 cup of evaporated mile plus 1/2 cup of water. Or follow the directions on a box of powdered milk. It’s a good idea to have a can of evaporated milk handy for emergencies. If you don’t use it during holiday baking, keep it for your other emergency kit.

Buttermilk: Also called sour milk, is used to give recipes a little zip. Substitute 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar plus enough whole milk to make 1 cup (let stand 5 minutes before using), OR use 1 cup whole milk plus 1 3/4 teaspoons cream of tartar OR use 1 cup of plain yogurt.

Whipping Cream: Whipped cream from scratch is worth the work. If time is not on your side, just use frozen dessert topping. 1 cup whipping cream equals 2 cups dessert topping.

Light Cream: if you do not have 1 cup of light cream use 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons of milk plus 2 tablespoons of butter.

Cornstarch: Great for thickening sauces; if you do not have 1 tablespoon of cornstarch use 2 tablespoons of flour. Always dissolve it in a little water, broth or juice before you add it to your sauce to avoid lumps.

Arrowroot: Not a mystical ingredient but another thickening agent for sauces and soups. Substitute 2 tablespoons of regular flour or 1 tablespoon of cornstarch for one tablespoon of arrowroot. If you decide your sauce still isn’t thick enough, you can always add more. Dissolve in water or broth for easier mixing.

As a general rule if you are baking in the oven, you must follow the recipe as closely as possible. Not only do your ingredients add flavor, they also serve a specific function like making your bread rise, or binding ingredients together. If you are using milk or cream in a sauce, you have more flexibility. For example, if you are making gravy, a splash of milk instead of cream is fine. The fat content should only effect the flavor of your sauce, not the final product.

Looking for something to do with your children on those rainy days, when everyone seems to be cooped up indoors? When my daughter was small, we used to do craft projects together. It quickly became a ‘rainy day’ tradition in our household.

I feel it’s important to spend quality time with our children. These days, too many children are sitting in front of a television watching TV shows, or playing video games. I don’t find this to be quality family time.

Here are 4 easy craft projects that you can do with your children.

Soapy Bath Crayons

1 c. grated Ivory Soap

1/4 c. warm water

food coloring

plastic cookie cutters

Mix water, soap and food coloring together in an old bowl. Stir the crayon mixture until it begins to stiffen. Remove the mixture from the bowl and knead until it’s the consistency of a very thick dough. Spoon crayon mixture into plastic cookie cutters or other plastic molds (play dough molds work great too!). Press down firmly. Place the plastic cookie cutters in your freezer for 10 minutes. When firm, pop the bath crayons out of the cookie cutters. Allow them to air dry overnight.

Play Dough

2 c. flour

1 c. salt

4 tsp. cream of tartar

2 c. of water

4 tbsp. oil

food coloring

Place flour, salt, cream of tartar, water, and oil into a large pan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until dough comes away from the edge of pan, and makes a soft ball. Cool on a sheet of waxed paper. When cool, add food coloring. Store in plastic containers or in plastic bags.

Finger Paints

2 c. of plastic liquid starch

1 c. of Ivory Snow detergent flakes

food coloring

Combine liquid starch and Ivory Snow in a large bowl. Beat with a mixer until the volume is tripled. Divide, add in food coloring as desired. Store in covered containers in the refrigerator.

Blowing Bubbles Refills

1/2 c. liquid dish detergent

5 c. water

1 container with lid

1 bubble blowing wand

Mix water and dish washing liquid together in a large bowl. Don’t over mix. Pour liquid into empty bubble blowing containers.

Tip: When you spend time crafting, please remember to take photographs. It’s a great way to preserve all of these wonderful memories.

Take advantage of those rainy days, and spend some time crafting with your children.

Getting a tattoo representing strength and guidance is an excellent choice. It can apply to personal areas of your life where guidance and being strong are necessary, favorable qualities to represent. But what tattoo should you get to represent these qualities? Here are some great ideas:

1. The Star tattoo. Specifically the nautical star tattoo, but there are now many variations of this to choose from. Sailors used to get inked with the nautical star tattoo as exactly a symbol of guidance and strength to find there way safely home from battle.

Now days you will see many mixed martial arts fighters with the star tattoo as a symbol to guide them safely through their own chosen form of battle.

We all have personal battles and goals where we could use a strong dose of direction in finding our way. The star tattoo can be an excellent way to represent positive direction.

2. The Dragon tattoo. A dragon tattoo can be a powerful, elaborate and even beautiful symbol of strength. It can also provide guidance and forging ahead through it’s fire breathing capabilities, knocking down negative forces in it’s path.

Dragon tattoo’s are great, strong, and as said beautiful and elaborate images that are very powerful to the eye. Everyone notices a dragon tattoo and even takes time to take in it’s design on skin.

Whether you choose a star tattoo or dragon tattoo, be sure to research all the different design variations available. You can have a dragon or star in many different forms, from traditional to tribal, to something much more modern and elaborate.

This article is about “Cancer Centers of America locations”, we hope to bring more articles about “Cancer Centers of America locations” in the near future:

Uterine cancer occurs in women aged 40 to 50 years and post-menopausal women, with fewer than 5% of child bearing women at risk of developing this cancer. A common approach against most tumors is its removal together with the organ it is attached to thereby necessitating a hysterectomy. Physicians determine if uterus removal is adequate or whether the tumor has extended to surrounding lymph nodes and ovaries.

There are standard surgical and chemotherapeutic procedures or other options and certain women may opt for a hysterectomy followed by alternative methods of treatment to replace radiation, chemotherapy, hormonal blocking which cause anemia, nausea, hair loss and generally feeling totally miserable. Some women decline surgical procedures while some may choose the hysterectomy and chemotherapy together with alternative treatments.

Certain medical centers approach cancer treatment with alternative procedures which could (or could not) incorporate regular Western type medical procedures. Cancer Treatment Centers of America, the Issels and Envista are some of the centers that view cancer treatment from the position that medical options must help the body in treating itself.

Alternative cancer treatments (including uterine cancer) start by focusing on the improvement of the immune system – the body has self healing abilities provided it gets the correct nutrition.

Diet intakes, low in whole, raw foods and high in animal fats and processed foods, don’t provide the minerals, vitamins and living enzymes required by the body for new cell creation. Chemically or artificially produced vitamins do not possess intricate enzymatic activities as found in natural food sources. Alternative treatment centers recommend, even insisting on diet changes for patients, to diets that support the fight against cancer. Changing eating habits may be problematic, however, it becomes easier once the patients perspective has changed.

Naturopathic physicians use non-toxic, natural alternative treatments and therapies which supports the person as a whole, not only focusing on one facet of the disease treatment (as in standard Western medical procedures) and seek to minimize harmful effects by applying the least force possible in boosting the immune system. Scientific and time tested therapies include botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, classical Chinese medicine, environmental medicine, hydrotherapy and minor surgery thereby resulting in a natural environment which promotes self healing in the body.

Another alternative treatment is immunotherapy in conjunction with a multidisciplinary approach and involves physical therapists, nutritionists, dieticians, naturopathic physicians and immunizations (to boost immune systems).

Although alternative therapies are more main stream nowadays, before choosing it to treat uterine cancer, check the track record and other references of applicable treatment facilities – avoid sole practitioners as best results are achieved when medical professionals combine their skills in a team effort.

Choosing a Japanese symbol for a tattoo design can be a difficult decision. There are so many characters to choose from, it is worth taking the time to research and understand all of the options. There are a number of tattoo designs that are ever popular, including the Japanese symbol for family. Read on to find out more about this popular tattoo design.

The Japanese symbol for family is usually written in Kanji. There are three alphabets in Japanese, called hiragana, katakana and kanji. Most tattoo design will either use katakana, if it is for a name or kanji if it is for a word or concept. Kanji is the name in Japanese given to the chinese characters that are used in the Japanese language and were originally adapted from Chinese.

The Japanese word for family is ka-zoku. It is actually made up of two characters. The first character has the sound ka and means ‘house’ or ‘home’. The second character is read zoku and has the meaning of ‘group’, ‘clan’ or ‘family’. Together the two characters form the meaning ‘family’ and it is pronounced kazoku.

Some of the other Japanese symbols that are always popular for tattoos are also related to the family theme. These include father, mother, daughter, sister and brother. If you have looked at all of the Japanese symbols related to family and still can’t decide, then you could always go for a universally popular character, the character for Love. In Japanese the word for Love is ‘ai’ and is only one character of 13 strokes, which makes it a good choice if you are looking for a symbol with a strong meaning in one character.

This article is about “Riddles to test listening skills”, we hope to bring more articles about “Riddles to test listening skills” in the near future:

Someone, somewhere has said that “whenever I find a key to success, someone changes the lock” such is the case with our education system where getting admission to post graduate degree is becoming hard task to achieve, every now and then changing criteria, mind boggling IQ based practice guides, skill enhancing slogans by large number of academies, where one gets easily lost amidst academic intricacies of system afterwards falling prey to pseudo institutions. Today an entry test is considered to be a key to unlock various academic doors leading to certain domains. Previously Pakistan had UGC (University Grants commission) in order to conduct admissions in entire universities all over Pakistan that body was not functioning effectively.

Then came revolution in education scenario of Pakistan along with the advent of Dr. Attaur Rehman, who completely changed and modified this system under the label of HEC (Higher Education Commission). Now the situation is that approximately all universities follow one academic calendar year in order to maintain the quality of education. To keep pace with the modern world it was need of hour to give admissions to those students who were eligible enough and could compete at international level. For this purpose HEC introduced various foreign as well as indigenous scholarships, criterion of competence was to judge English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. To equate Pakistani students with international students and to check their aptitude in certain subjects, there was a yardstick to measure communication and analytical skills along with the decision power, the name of this international test was GRE (Graduate Record Examination) conducted by ETS (Educational Testing System).

On this pattern Pakistan also introduced an entry test in order to cater a large number of students out there; a body was established on the footprints of ETS called NTS (National Testing System). Being new in the field and having lack of expertise, NTS collapsed in the beginning in order to accommodate enormous students seeking admission to master degree, which afterwards resulted in quashing this new way of enrollment thus universities conducted admission through the same traditional style.

While on the other hand, aspiring candidates for M.phil and PhD programme were limited so NTS carried out test, based on international GRE pattern. After a year or so NTS developed NAT for the graduates seeking admission to Master degree and GAT for those looking for M.phil and also who were applying for fellowship. But major drawback in this system was that it lacked in Subject test and only General test was available, this made the situation quite intricate for those who were seeking admission to humanities group even then they had to go through mathematical and analytical portion. That comprised Verbal Ability 50%, Quantitative Ability 25%, and Analytical Ability 25%. The pattern was best suited for the students of sciences and social sciences, recently NTS has introduced subject tests but the range is very limited and specifically for those who are going for PhD.

There is computerized checking system for GAT and NAT, but the process of rechecking contains many loopholes; moreover many students are getting quite unexpected results. Few university HODs do not agree to this system owing to its intricacies, they are of the view that students of far-flung areas remain oblivious of all such process usually end up devoid of admission even holding good score in their respective subjects.

Another side of picture is that many institutes and academies are manipulating this situation. Preparing for such entry tests entails an extra burden for students in terms of time, money and energy along with the feelings of insecurity and uncertainty. Candidates from remote areas stay at hostels adjacent to such academies just to enhance their skill of taking test, the whole package costs enough amount equal to one semester fee of a worthy degree at renowned university.

Although this can be termed an effective yardstick to measure competence of aspirants, but those who have no aptitude for Quantitative and Analytical portions and whose mainstream is humanities group, face dire complications.

In short NTS should introduce subject test comprising questions of related subject only. Recently Punjab Education Minister has declared that there should be no need to hold entry test and students should be given admission on the basis of their result, moreover students are not well prepared to appear in Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) based entry test after qualifying their mostly subjective examinations. Keeping in view these issues, Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool held a meeting with vice chancellors of public sector universities and decided that the National Testing System (NTS) would not be compulsory and respective universities along with their academic departments could decide to accept the NTS test or hold their own entry tests in order to complete their admission criterion. In addition to this, he said the Education Department had also held a meeting with stakeholders regarding holding of entry test and the type of questions to be asked in the test.

Such is the education scenario in Pakistan all messy and muddled, how can one longs for earning a smooth degree among all such paradoxes and changing parameters. By introducing this entry test our system has borrowed a fragment from foreign education system rather taking whole infrastructure, students being devoid of analytical approach at elementary and secondary school level cannot solve riddles over nightly, where as that requires specific skill. Unless we uproot cramming syndrome, cannot expect conceptual and analytical output from young lot, moreover it depends on education system, semester system is far better than annual system. Through semester system students learn to work in fragments systematically with thorough comprehension that would ultimately help them take such kind of IQ based tests adroitly.

This article is about “Brain lobes and functions for kids”, we hope to bring more articles about “Brain lobes and functions for kids” in the near future:

As a counselor and life coach I have always taken a strong stand against having a television or computer in any child or teens’ bedroom, period. Yes, we used this rule in our own home. We had objections at times and that’s alright. It didn’t change our actions.

My rationale is two fold. First, I see the social isolation, decrease in social/emotional skills, decrease in peer interaction and increase disrespect of authority from children and teens who have electronics in their bedrooms.

Having visual electronics in kids’ bedrooms decreases the amount of time families spend together, increases the risk of early exposure to pornography and children acting out sexually, decreases the number of family dinners, and decreases the amount of social play time with other young people. The negative impact of this is apparent in school as well. These children have a shorter attention span, more often want to get their way, have lower than average social skills and often feel socially isolated.

The second reason, is knowing a thing or two about brain development, I knew that TV and computer use does not tap into the normal brain development and brain stimulation needed to make our young people healthy and happy. Now we have plenty of research to back that up.

Let’s look at the summary of research from Joseph Chilton Pearce who is a scholar, scientist and teacher. He states: “First, if you want intelligent, successful and healthy children they must have positive emotional experiences. This starts in the home through unconditional love, appropriate loving touch and a safe, secure environment. Then it extends into our learning environments. If you want true learning, learning that involves the higher frontal lobes…the intellectual creative brain…the emotional environment must be positive and supportive. The first sign of anxiety the brain shifts its functions from the high, prefrontal lobes to the old defenses of the reptilian brain.” To put it simply: In order to have a higher functioning child we need to nurture head and heart. The heart and brain communicate with one another in an intricate symphony of ganglia cells, neural networks and neurotransmitters.

Pearce talks about the harmful effects of television and computers on growing brains regardless of content. “Television literally prevents neural growth in the developing brains of children. When young children watch too much, it suppresses the capacity of their brains to develop imagination.” This has to do with the way that the brain reacts to radiant light. Children’s brains “shut down” (stop the thinking process).

The television industry has countered this by introducing “startle effects” into children’s programming. This triggers the brain into thinking there might be an emergency and alerts the brain to pay special attention. This is accomplished by dramatic changes in the intensity of light, sound and rapid shifting camera angles. According to Pearce “Every 10 years the TV industry ups the ante by making the startles bigger, there are now an average of 16 bits of violence every half hour in children’s cartoons. The moment the heart receives any indication of negativity or danger it drops out of its usual harmonic mode into an incoherent one, triggering the release of the single most potent hormone in the human body, known as cortisol. Cortisol instantly wakes up the brain and causes it to produce trillions of neural links in order to ready the individual to face the emergency.”

Computer monitors have a similar effect due to the radiant light. Researchers’ assigned students to 3 groups where the same information was presented on a fourth grade reading level in 3 different mediums. Group A had a regular piece of paper; Group B was shown a movie with the page; Group C viewed a computer monitor. Students were then tested for retention of the information.

Group A averaged 85% retention after viewing a paper; Group B averaged 25% – 30% retention after viewing a movie screen; Group C averaged 3% – 5% retention after viewing a computer monitor. “Computers & television are changing our children’s brains. We must encourage our children to develop the ability to think first and then give them a computer. Pearce sites Piaget’s developmental research ” The first twelve years of life are spent putting into place the structures of knowledge that enable young people to grasp abstract, metaphoric, symbolic types of information…the danger is that the computer and television will interrupt that development.”

Single mothers face a lot of problems while bringing up children in USA. Financial problems being the most important as ex-husband may not pay the court order money for child support. These mothers may not be able to do a full time job as a result they may not be able to pay for day care and may not meet the criteria for head start. Many are thus dependent on AFDC (aid to families with dependent children) or WIC (Women Infants and children). This dependence on welfare organization once established is difficult to break.

There are many reasons for the financial worries of single mothers. Although most ex-spouses fulfill their court ordered financial obligations regarding their children; a few of them do not comply with this court ordered support. The latter case not only results in extra psychological and physical burden on the single mother, it makes it difficult for her to fulfill the requirements of the child in regards to food and clothing. A lot of people may consider court ordered support as luxury; but on the contrary it is just enough to meet the requirements.

The children constantly grow so they require a regular supply of clothing and food. Education is not entirely free even in state schools. Similarly preschool children require child care, whereas day care is difficult to afford. More over the WIC or AFDC will not support the mother till the issue of court order is resolved. This means going back to the court again and making your ex-husband to pay either by wage garnishment or by any other legal way. It is not an easy task to find an ex- husband so the lone mother can do nothing than to rely on herself alone. This places the mother as well as the child in a danger of becoming homeless. These are the risks of single parenting.

It is difficult to afford daycare as they usually require up to $400 per month. Most lone mothers have to take a job. However with the daycare being so costly it may not be possible for the mother to work as well as look after her preschool children. The head start and the early start are good supportive programs but most of these mothers do not fall in the specified low income groups especially when receiving court support.

So they may not get any support from head start and have to bare all the expenses of daycare all by themselves. She might not get some help from the child’s preschool also. Actually she belongs to the working community among poor. These and such are the problems faced by a single mum in America.

Short comings in the welfare system also effect these single mothers. These mothers are considered the same as any other poor social group by many federal and state programs which run WIC and AFDC. On the other hand these women are more likely to suffer from many psychiatric illnesses which then become a major hurdle in getting job or other financial assistance. As a result of which it becomes difficult for them to gain financial independence and they become permanently dependent on welfare.

As a whole the single mothers living in USA face problems which are quite different from others. It is essential that more funds should be allocated for them
