Chest pains are most commonly connected to heart attacks. When people feel chest pains they automatically fear something wrong with the heart. People are terrified by the idea of having a heart attack because they are so dangerous and they kill so many people every year. When a person has a panic attack one of the main symptoms other than a racing heart beat is chest pains. These symptoms along with numb feelings and arm pain cause a person to call the ambulance for a rush to the hospital.
So what causes chest pains during an anxiety attack?
Think about what happens during a panic attack; your body is in fear response mode. That means that you will be breathing harder in order to pump more blood. If you were being attacked by a wild animal you would need to act quickly, that’s why we have a built in fight or flight response. Without thought your body starts pumping chemicals needed to move as fast as possible to avoid to fight danger. When you have a panic attack you have the same response, but without any visible or obvious danger.
Why do you need more blood pumping in your body if your not going to run or utilize any extra activity? The answer is you wouldn’t and this will cause pain. You will start breathing in very deeply without needing it causing you to breath out normally. This will cause you to accumulate extra air in your chest and diaphragm area that you don’t need. Eventually this will cause pain because your chest is expanding beyond it’s limits and pushing on your rib cage.
The second cause of chest pain may also be a little bit of acid reflux. When you become stressed your body sends blood flow away from digestion to other parts of the body. During the fight or flight response especially, the body completely shuts off all digestion because it is not important. The longer food stays in the stomach the worse the higher chance acid will back up in your esophagus. This can cause chest pains and very painful throat pain.
How do you stop the pain?
Your first instinct will be to worry and keep taking deep breaths. This is actually counter productive and chances are you won’t be able to catch your breath making you worry more. The best option would be to breath out as much as you can to relieve pressure on your chest. Then try to breath in normally. Your second option is to use the paper bag method. This helps people when they are hyperventilating.
To help with chest pain caused by acid reflux you might want to try drinking milk or water. Water is completely neutral so it won’t get rid of acid, but it will thin it out. Milk is mildly basic so it should neutralize the acid a little, but this might also make you sick. Try not to sit in a slouched position because this will worsen the effects. If you feel anxious, try to use relaxation methods to clear up the problem while you drink plenty of water.
