Most people cannot tell the difference between anxiety attack versus a heart attack which have led to several unavoidable deaths in the past few years. Recently, a neighbor was rushed to the emergency room of Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale/Phoenix, Arizona with complaints of nausea, chest pains and shortness of breath. Upon examination and tests, it was confirmed that it is not a heart problem but just an anxiety attack.

My neighbor could not easily tell the difference between one attack from the other; even the wife just looked helpless too. Anyone can be so easily deceived since the symptoms of anxiety attack and heart attack are very much similar.

As you grow older, it is wise you know the difference because both can cause an increase in heart rate and irregular heart beat.

Most people cannot easily distinguish the warning signs of one attack from the other since both present discomfort and pain.

The warning signs of a heart attack include the following but may vary from person to person:

· Upper back pain

· Heavy pressure, tightness, pain or discomfort in the center of the chest.

· Sweating, faintness or shortness of breath.

· A rapid and weak pulse.

· Feeling a sense of impending doom.

· Sharp stabbing pain in the left side of the chest.

For women, the typical symptoms of heart attack are not the usual “tightness”, discomfort or pain in the chest. Instead, women experience a wider range of sensations, which include the following:

· Shortness of breath

· Abdominal pain and fluttering heartbeat

· Uneasy feeling in the chest

· Fatigue, Nausea

· Dizziness and/or fainting

The warning signs of anxiety attacks are characterized by acute development of several of the following symptoms reaching peak severity within 10 to 15 minutes:

· Escalating tension

· Chest pain or discomfort, palpitations, “pounding heart”, racing heart

· Sweating, chills, or hot flushes

· Tremor or “shakes”

· Feeling of choking or shortness of breath

· Nausea, “butterflies”, or abdominal pain

· Dizziness, feeling light headed or faintness

· Feeling of dying, loss of control or “going crazy”

You can see that many of the symptoms of anxiety attack and heart attack are similar. So, both attacks can be difficult to distinguish.

Medical examination is the best way to tell the difference between anxiety disorder and heart attack. Usually, after an attack the person with an anxiety disorder will return to normal and will show no signs or symptoms but the person with a heart attack will surely show the symptoms.

It is good to know that a heart attack is a medical emergency and prompt treatment increases the chance for survival. If you suspect that you or someone around you is experiencing a heart attack, it is wise to call for help or seek immediate medical attention. If someone has a heart attack, you must act very fast before it is too late. You must perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and artificial respiration (mouth to mouth resuscitation) immediately while seeking for immediate medical help.

In the case of anxiety attack, you may feel embarrassed to know that your situation is not as serious as someone with a heart attack but it is wise you take immediate actions to eliminate the future occurrence of anxiety attacks.

One way to eliminate anxiety attacks is through cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been proven and time-tested to be the most effective therapy in dealing with the anxiety attacks.

Once you can learn how to focus on making today better so that your future can become the best, you are sure to destroy anxiety attacks completely from your life.

Today, anxiety attack is being successfully treated in the vast majority of cases. Cognitive behavioral therapy plus a strong self-belief, desire for the good things of life, adequate motivation and persistence to destroy anxiety attacks from your life are the essential raw materials in overcoming and eliminating anxiety attacks.
