Have you ever felt a rush of anxiety or panic come over you and you weren’t sure why it happened or what it was? Everyone has felt a twinge of anxiety here and there, but when it seems to be out of control or it seems to happen for almost no reason at all, that can be a problem. It can make you feel like you have to avoid certain situations, and that can be enough to make you want to get some control over the situation.

Here are some signs of a panic attack:

• Your body starts to tremble or shake
• Your breathing becomes difficult
• Your heart starts racing faster and faster
• You break out in sweating for no apparent reason
• Feeling like you might die

As you can see, some of these signs or symptoms of a panic attack can be pretty terrifying themselves. At the very least, they are all things that you do not want to have to deal with on an ongoing basis. The problem becomes worse when you start to fear having panic attacks, so you begin to avoid doing things or going places that you think will set off another attack.

Luckily, there are many solutions that are available to help you to control these panic attacks, and in some cases, get rid of them altogether. If you have ever felt the signs of an anxiety attack, then you know that it is not something that you want to have occur frequently.

You may want to consult with your physician to see if they have any prescriptions that are available to help you deal with your attacks, and they can also point you in the direction of some more natural solutions. You may also want to cut down on things that are stimulants to the body, as these can make a panic attack even worse. Things like coffee, nicotine, and any other kind of stimulant can make the panic attack harder for you to control, and they can make them happen more frequently.

Credit card companies and retailers are constantly trying to devise new ways of making transactions more secure and putting measures in place to prevent card fraud. The disruption caused to your life if you become a victim of credit card fraud generally only lasts a few days, but it often causes deep distress. Fraudulent transactions in the UK topped over £500 million last year – below are measures you can take to avoid contributing to this statistic.

- If you have trouble remember your PIN and need to write it down, do not keep the paper in the same place as your credit card as this will make using your card very easy if a fraudster steals your wallet. Consider changing it to a number more memorable to you, but try to avoid obvious choices such as your date of birth, which someone known to you could easily guess.

- When shopping online, make sure you only use secure sites and try to stick to reputable retailers.

- Destroy all receipts and statements before binning them, preferably by shredding the documents. This not only will help prevent fraudsters from obtaining your details to use for online or phone transactions, it will also protect you from identity theft.

- Do not give your PIN number out to anyone. Be wary of phone calls where operators request that you confirm your PIN number, or other personal information. Your bank will never ask you for your PIN.

- If you cannot find your credit card, call your card issuer and report it as lost immediately to avoid becoming liable for any transactions that could be made if it falls into the hands of a fraudster. Follow up the conversation with a letter, so your bank has written confirmation that the card is no longer in your possession. As soon as the card has been reported lost or stolen your car issuer will put a stop on the card and issue you with a new one. Remember, it is better to be safe than sorry.

If you have taken precautions and still find an unrecognised transaction on your statement, please do not panic. Not every unfamiliar transaction is a result of fraud. A large number of the enquiries banks receive about unrecognised credit card payments turn out to be, in fact, the cardholders. Transactions can be billed under a retailer group name, for instance Burtons may also appear as ‘Arcadia’, and that transaction showing under a location 50 miles away may in fact be a local transaction billed under a head office address. In the case of transactions made where a card is not present, such as internet transactions, many are down to someone with a similar card number to your own unwittingly mistyping their card number.

If you have an unrecognised transaction on your statement call your card issuer. In some instances, the operator may be able to give you further information about the transaction that could jog your memory and help you recognise it. They will also be able to tell you if the transaction was keyed or if the card was present and a PIN number used. If you still do not recognise it but the card is in your possession and you have no further reasons to suspect fraud, most banks then request written confirmation of this before they will process a credit. The retailer then has the option of sending supporting documentation through with further information about the charge. The transaction will be reapplied if the charge turns out to be genuine. In the unfortunate event that the transaction is confirmed as fraud, your Bank will issue you with a new card and pursue the fraudsters in conjunction with the police. No further action will be required on your part.

Finally, remember to always check your statements! Getting a refund for your money and the likelihood of catching fraudsters can both be compromised if you do not notice a fraudulent transaction until several months have passed by.

More and more counselors are turning the American past time movies into an effective therapeutic tool. I personally incorporated the use of Cinema Therapy with clients informally more than five years ago. Within the past two years, however, I have begun to use it more consistently as an adjunctive form of service when planning treatment. Movies deal with a range of life issues that are appropriate for all ages, cultures, and backgrounds. In the ongoing debate does life emulate the movies or do movies emulate real life? One thing is clear: Movies address many of our common problems. Some very practical answers and life choices are provided in the 90 to 180 minute reel. Therefore, movies often give clients insight into their own lives.

After seeing Field of Dreams in 1989, If you build it, they will come became my slogan for the year. Those words of inspiration and hope gave me encouragement to step out in faith and accomplish many goals. I am sure I have seen the film over 20 times and every time is like the first. I was flooded with emotion. The list of things I needed to build filled by mind. Sitting in that dark theater, tears streamed down my face as I identified the many things I wanted to do but was afraid to take the risk. I slipped past my friend, stepped into the aisle, rushed to the back of the theater, and cried like a baby. Periodically, I rent the video to remind me to follow my heart, to hear the voice within, and to forge ahead. The movie had an awesome healing effect. As clients connect with various characters, they are able to identify similarities to and differences from their own stories. This is often a great bridge from the reel to the real.

People Are Watching Movies: Cinema is a global phenomenon, seen by millions of people throughout the world. It has a powerful Impact, consciously or unconsciously, on the behavior of people. A 1993 Variety magazine survey reported that world box office receipts totaled $8 billion, and that home video rental is also a lucrative business. Of the top-earning 100 films, 88 were U.S. productions. We go to the movies for different reasons: some for the magic, others for the meaning. Movies can provide entertainment or a temporary escape from our reality. They can be relaxing or exciting, and for many, they have become a way to cope. As therapists and counselors, we can tap into these easily accessible and readily available old_resources.

What Is Cinema Therapy?

Cinema Therapy is the use of movies (current releases or videos) by counselors as a therapeutic tool in the healing process of clients. It is not a discipline requiring specialized training, such as art or music therapy. It should, however, be done by a mental health practitioner skilled at processing a clients cognitive, affective, and behavioral responses. Depending on the client, the concept may be introduced formally or informally at two different points during treatment. The first opportunity comes during the initial assessment when gathering historical data. Most new clients usually indicate behavioral changes (especially in leisure activities). At this time I ask, What do you do for entertainment? Or Do you like movies? This is also a way of establishing rapport with the client. I briefly share my interest in movies, their positive therapeutic value, and that other clients have benefited from the experience. The second opportunity to introduce Cinema Therapy is when the client discusses information that reminds the counselor of a particular film or video. I share some of the similarities in the storyline, viewpoints/mindsets, and suggest that the client view it. Then we plan to discuss his or her reaction at the next session.

Life Is longer Than the Movies: Though the worlds of life and fiction have similarities, they are also very different. Movies often cover a continuum of development from infancy to adulthood. Realizing that movies can cover an entire lifetime in approximately two hours, clients should be cautioned that solutions may take longer to implement than they do to watch. The real world does not always come neatly packaged. We do not know what will finally happen in our own lives. We can, however, become interested in fictional characters, find out what happens to them, and gain insight for our own problem resolution. Clients are usually capable of pointing out how someone else should have handled a situation. They will then go on to explain what they would have done differently. Movies serve as catalysts that stimulate discussion leading to transparency and disclosure.

From the Reel To the Real: When clients view movies they draw comparisons with their real-world knowledge of human behaviors and what seems to be a plausible, likely, or consistent response by a person in a given situation. If a client decides the actors emotions in the film are appropriate and convincing, given the narrative circumstances, he or she may be able to share in the characters emotions by way of empathy. Clients also engage in a complex set of evaluations about the moral and ethical acceptability of a characters screen behavior and sequence of events. As a result of their disclosure, you will be able to determine strengths and weaknesses in how the individual processes information as well as his or her ability to abstract, reason, and gather insights. When a client is viewing a movie for use in Cinema Therapy, there are several categories that may be used as catalysts to get the person thinking about his or her own issues. Five are mentioned here: Listen for one-liners (e.g., There is no place like home Wizard of Oz; You can’t handle the truth A Few Good Men; Make my day Dirty Harry; May the force be with you Star Wars). Look for themes (e.g., confronting your fears, taking revenge, getting a new start in life, extending forgiveness). Observe relational dynamics (e.g., obsessive-compulsive, codependency, poor boundaries). Identify significant issues (abuse, anxiety, marriage, chronic illness). Give each film the Bible test by asking, does the movie demonstrate a violation or application of Scripture?

Assigning Movies as Homework: If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the value of a movie. When movies are assigned as homework, the counselor should have a clear objective. Ask yourself, what do I hope to accomplish with my client through this film? Cinema Therapy is not just watching movies but viewing with a specific purpose. Selected movies should address issues (Figure 1) that clients are facing or be based on their areas of interest (e.g., action, drama, romance, comedy, western, science fiction, fairy-tale, etc.). Counselors should be cautioned that the movie rating system (G General Audience, PG Parental Guidance, PG-13Suitable for adolescents, R Restricted/no one under 18 admitted without pare not or guardian) does not always accurately reflect the content of a movie. Make sure you watch the movie first and advise your client of material that may be objectionable or offensive (e.g., profanity, nudity, graphic violence). Sound judgment should be used. Again, ask yourself, Is the film clinically, spiritually, and age appropriate? Clients may view a first-run movie at a local theater or rent a home video. There are advantages to both venues.

At the theater, they have wide-screen viewing and no intermissions (interruptions). Advantages of home video include the ability to pause and replay certain scenes as well as viewing in the privacy and comfort of home. Whichever venue your clients choose, ask them to complete a Movie Review Sheet (Figure 2). Beyond the obvious, clients may be moved by a variety of subtleties in the film. Be prepared to deal with concepts a client may identify that you did not intend to address. Clients may also view the film and not want to discuss it. No pressure should be applied to make something happen. Documented information from the Movie Review Sheet can be used in a later session. If the client has seen the movie, he or she has been Impacted (positively or negatively). Reality Sets In The Case of Caroline In the practice of Cinema Therapy, I have found that Reality-Based, Rational-Emotive, and Behavioral approaches are most effective. This does not limit the use of other theoretical orientations as preferred by some counselors. Below is a brief synopsis of a case using a reality-based therapeutic intervention in conjunction with Cinema Therapy.

Caroline is a 38-year-old mother of three girls between the ages of 5 and 10. She is recently divorced from a physically, verbally, and spiritually abusive narcissistic, bipolar man. During one of our sessions, Caroline was discussing how her spouse was both impulsive and obsessive. Several things she said reminded me of the film, As Good As It Gets. Prior to sharing the similarities, I asked if she had seen the film and her view on it. To my surprise, she had hated the movie (I have seen it five or six times and recommended it to several other clients). It was a great moment. Caroline became angry as she shared how unrealistic the movie seemed. She was concerned that Helen Hunts character would marry Jack Nicholson’s character because he was charming but that she could forget about his character flaws. Then Helen would end up like Caroline, 10 years later, wondering how she had missed the obvious signs of dysfunction. As a result of domestic violence, Caroline suffers from low self-esteem and severe depression. This was first time she had voiced a strong opinion about anything. We discussed the questions from the Movie Review Sheet right then in session. This opened a door through which we could work more effectively. Caroline was not angry with the movie, but with herself for poor judgment and wrong choices. Because she felt embarrassed and ashamed of her situation, she had withdrawn from others (even those who cared about her well-being).

The film helped Caroline acknowledge that although she had been deeply hurt, she needed to connect with people in order to heal. At the same time, she needed to establish new patterns of relating. She was also challenged to answer the question, What if this is as good as it gets? Caroline began to evaluate her current reality and ask additional questions, such as Who am I? What have I learned from my past experiences that can help me in the present? What do I want from life? What do I want from relationships? Will my present behavior help me accomplish my desired goals? What am I willing to change? Over the course of treatment, Caroline began to accept personal responsibility for her life and to make a plan. She is learning to venture out and trust her new found insights. Find a therapist to get solutions to your problems.

Whereas Cinema Therapy can be used with a wide range of clients, it is not recommended for those with serious psychiatric disorders. Counselors should be aware that watching certain actions in a film may cause clients to relive their pain. Be sensitive. Instead of assigning movies as homework, film clips (5 to 10 minutes) can be viewed in session. Then content can be processed Immediately. Cinema Therapy is an underutilized intervention that I believe will increase in popularity as its application and effectiveness is better understood. Our lives can be viewed as one long movie without an intermission. Consider the storyline of The Truman Show. Meeting a new client is like coming in on the middle of a movie. It sometimes takes a while to figure out what’s going on, even when the client provides flashbacks. Using Cinema Therapy is a way for counselors to engage clients in nonthreatening ways as they share the plots of their stories.

Many states have created laws to protect consumers in the gift card industry. A while back, businesses were selling gift cards, but not clearly disclosing expiration dates and fees that were associated with gift card inactivity, etc…

The state laws have been around for a long time, and there haven’t really been any major changes in this sector of consumer law, but it is always a surprise to come into contact with businesses that still aren’t following the rules. Either they don’t know the laws in their particular state, or they think that consumers won’t challenge them on it. This list should serve to both educate businesses and consumers.

Take note that there is some controversy on whether the state laws apply to where the gift card was issued or where the gift card is being used especially when the business operates in many states. In general, it is assumed that the law applies to where the gift card was issued unless the business only operates in one state, and you got your gift card shipped to you in another state. In that case, you should assume that the laws of the state where the business operates apply.

Arkansas

o No expiration date within the first two years.

o No fees for two years. Any fees after two year period must be printed clearly on front or back of card in at least 10 point font.

o Covers gift cards useable at single store or chain.

o Does not cover cards linked to bank accounts usable with multiple unaffiliated merchants or prepaid calling cards.

California

o No expiration dates and no fees, with one exception.

o Permits a $1 per month fee only when the card has a balance of $5 or less, the card has been unused for 24 months, and the card is reloadable.

o Covers gift cards at a single store or chain. Multiple-use gift cards are not covered.

o Cards with an initial value of $5 or less; or rewards or refund cards with $5 or less after redemption may be redeemed in cash.

Maryland

o No expiration dates for four years.

o No fees for four years.

o Any terms and conditions must be printed clearly in 10 point type on the card, on a sticker affixed to the card or in an envelope containing the card.

o Does not cover prepaid calling cards or prepaid bank cards.

Massachusetts

o No expiration dates for 7 years.

o Cards with a remaining balance of $5 or less may be redeemed in cash.

o Does not include prepaid calling cards or any electronic cards usable with multiple unaffiliated merchants.

Michigan

o No expiration dates for five years.

Minnesota

o No expiration dates.

o No fees.

o Does not include debit cards or other legal access devices used to access a deposit account, prepaid calling cards, cards linked to bank accounts usable with multiple unaffiliated merchants.

Montana

o No expiration dates.

o No fees.

o If original value of gift card was more than $5, and remaining value is less than $5, can redeem for cash.

o Does not cover prepaid telecommunications or technology cards or gift certificates usable with multiple sellers.

Nevada

o Expiration or fees allowed only if properly disclosed.

o No fees within first year and no fees that exceed $1 per month.

o No expiration for cards of $100 or less.

o Expires after 2 years if unredeemed or after 5 years from date of purchase if no redemption period specified.

o Covers cards with single retailer or affiliated merchants.

o “Qualified gift certificates” do not expire and do not have fees.

o Does not cover flexible spending accounts or bank cards usable with multiple affiliated merchants or ATMs.

Rhode Island

o No expiration dates.

o No fees.

o Covers prepaid long distance telephone service cards.

o Does not cover prepaid wireless telephone service cards.

South Carolina

o No expiration dates for first year, unless expiration date is on front of card in capitalized letters in 10 point font.

o Fees permitted but must be disclosed on certificate, envelope, covering or receipt.

At times news stories from the kingdom of Saudi Arabia seem more like tales with Alice in Wonderland themes than believable news coverage.

Some of the laws are so bizarre you come to expect freakish reports. A lashing sentence for the “Girl of Qatif” who was a victim of rape … or poor guys like Haidi Al-Mutaif, a young Saudi whose jest about the prophet Muhammad earned him years in jail.

However a recent news report had me gawking.

Judge Saud al-Boushi sentenced 20 foreigners to prison terms of three to four months plus lashings for the crime of “impudent partying” in Jiddah.

What exactly is “impudent partying”? Revelers all waving their middle fingers in the direction of Mecca to the beats of Notorious B.I.G.? Group moonings directed toward the limousines of passing Saudi royalty?

No nothing quite so outrageous. These folks were dancing – dancing with members of the opposite sex in the usual time honored manner.

They weren’t naked and gyrating in provocative ways. No table dancers or flashers. Just basic no-frills dancing. How outrageous! Ignore the rumors that sheiks in the kingdom have reportedly been helping to keep sex traffickers well heeled and get up to all manner of hanky panky in their palatial romper rooms … focus instead on foreign infidels who have the impudence to dance!

It gets worse. The impudent ones weren’t merely dancing – they videotaped themselves while dancing. This amounts to a charge of “aggravated impudence” since narcissistic voyeurism comes into it also. The evil doers weren’t merely being impudent, but impudently videotaped their disco moves with the intention of impudently watching themselves afterwards.

No wonder judge Saud al-Boushi was deeply shocked. Some of them were even wearing tight fitting jeans and a few of the women impudently revealed tummy flesh when they raised their arms a few inches too high during We Will Rock You. How impudently out-of-control can things get?

To add fuel to the fire, drinks were served! I don’t mean coke, I mean alcoholic beverages.The evil brew – which presumably raised the impudence aggregate to dangerous seismic levels.

Even though 20 of the impudence doers were sentenced to prison and lashings, the Saudi religious police actually arrested a total of 433 foreigners, 240 of them women. That’s a lot of impudent infidels to cram into a cop shop.

Okay the kingdom enforces Islamic law. But why don’t they focus on Muslims. Foreigners working in the kingdom who aren’t Muslim and who don’t abide by Sharia law shouldn’t be harassed for socializing in the manner they see fit.

This type of cultural and religious tyranny makes it hard to watch Dick Cheney and other Bush people grinning and smiling (but not too impudently), as they stroll arm-in-arm with Saudi potentates. On one hand Bush harps about the sacred mission of exporting democracy, and on the other hand he’s in bed with robed oligarchs who deep down, despise everything democracy stands for. A little bit of a paradox?

The last time King Abdullah was at the Crawford ranch there was a picture of him leading Bush around by the arm as though the President was a small boy who needed to be told a thing or two. Which is true … just preferably not while sitting on the knee of Abdullah-of-the-Dunes.

What about the rights of foreign workers in Saudi Arabia? Shouldn’t our embassies and even the likes of Condoleezza Rice have something to say when foreigners in the kingdom are threatened with lashing and imprisonment for “impudent partying”? A term that remains ambiguous at best.

Without Mecca and oil, Saudi Arabia wouldn’t have a fraction of the influence it has today. Those two factors were fortuitous gifts that descended upon the Saudi generations and generated both wealth and power.

I wonder if there is any penalty for “impudent illusions-of-grandeur”?
