I had a most amazing night last night on my computer.

It was filled with insights after I watched clip after clip, of celebrities toasting the wonder of a great woman actress – Meryl Streep. She was given a lifetime award for acting, and the clips onscreen showed the heartfelt expressions of love from other celebrities – Shirley MacLaine, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kurt Douglas, Goldie Hawn, Nora Ephron, Robert DeNiro – showering their gratitude on Meryl Streep.

As I watched the exchange of love going back and forth, between Meryl and each celebrity onstage, I got caught up in the feeling of being Meryl Streep.

What would it feel like to BE Meryl Streep? I clicked on other video clips. Meryl being totally natural with a bronchial infection, coughing, laughing and joking with David Letterman. Meryl on the Ellen DeGeneres show, putting on a funny hat and improvising different accents with Ellen, just for fun. And of course, there was Meryl being interviewed about playing Julia Child, with her candid comments that she isn’t really a dedicated cook.

So – what did I get from this feeling of BEING? It felt totally wonderful, exhilarating and delightful. Feeling the spirit of Meryl is to feel totally in the present, loving, giving and enjoying life.

Goldie Hawn compared Meryl to a Stradivarius violin, with each string of her life resonating so beautifully… blending family and career harmoniously. Jack Nicholson said she was “perfect.” Kurt Douglas said that whoever had the privilege to work with Meryl would just have to fall in love with her.

Why is that? Because Meryl expresses love and gratitude so easily to those around her. It’s natural. Contagious. You pick it up and you are uplifted. You are more than you were before. (And the celebrities mentioned that too!) But I FELT it last night.

Naturally, there is only one Meryl Streep. But we can all be the best US.

Just think how it could be if we chose to act with love and gratitude in every situation. Even the tough ones. Each action we take has a reaction. In Meryl’s case, I was watching the reactions of love coming back at Meryl. It made me think – what actions have I taken in my life? What steps can I take to create the outcomes that I desire? What limiting core beliefs do I need to recognize to achieve my full potential?

It all started with a seemingly random google search to look up video clips on an actress I’ve always admired – Meryl Streep. And I got back so much more than I expected.

As Mike Nichols said, “Meryl’s got to be one of those phenomena, like Garbo, that happens once in a generation.” You’ve taught me more by watching you as yourself than in all the great film roles you’ve created. I join all the others in toasting you. With Love & Gratitude!

For a long period of time mind games have been the cause of argument and disagreement between women and men. While both sides blame each other one should remember that there are two sides to a coin. It is true that both women and mane like to play mind games with each other but when it comes to blaming, they invariably and without fail blame each other.

Nobody cares to see that they to are the accused ones whilst they are pointing their fingers at somebody else. So why do men play mind games with the women they love? Here are the top 3 reasons:

Emotional Insecurity

Men play mind games with the women they love because they feel emotionally insecure. There are other reasons too. Many a times these games are played by people who are not mature enough. However a woman should be careful if her man is playing mind games with her. Many women have committed the mistake of breaking a steady relationship just because of this. If you are having a steady relationship with your man and find him playing mind games with you, do not even contemplate of breaking the relationship instantaneously.

It is better that you discuss with your partner and give him a second opportunity. Chances are that these problems will resolve. However if they do not, it’s high time to break the relationship. So do not go ahead and do something drastic with your relationship unless you are sure and once you see that it has reached a point of no return, you’re better off in breaking the same.

Mind Games and Why

Men play mind games with women for various reasons. While some of them play these games just to tease their partner, others play these games to prove their superiority. In the latter case it is due to a false and inflated ego. The expectations are too much. While they do not accept your calls while they are busy, they expect you to take their calls even if you are busy.

Their logic is that their partner should be free to receive calls when they are free to make one. Most of the times the men simply lie and women hate liars. Little things like this play a large part in breaking a steady relationship.

Dishonesty

This is one of the worst mind games that men play with the women they love. Ask them about their previous relationships and they will keep beating around the bush. They will never provide a straight and honest answer. Ask him about where the relationship between you and him is heading and chances are that even this question will be either disregarded or bypassed.

As mentioned earlier, men play these games just for the heck of it and this might not be perceived so casually by the woman. If a man plays these mind games with you as an opportunity to sleep with you he is a born looser and the faster you ditch him off, the better.

As in all of Hawthorne’s writings when one finishes reading his stories you come up with more questions than answers. No other writer makes you question like Hawthorne. The philosophical question of what is true perfection and can it be achieved through physical means or is it a state of the spirit is the heart of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story The Birth-Mark.

Aylmer, the main character of the story is a brilliant scientist/alchemist. He posses a belief in “man’s ultimate control over nature”, and thinks there is nothing man can’t master or achieve. His obsession with his wife’s small imperfect birth mark, which resembles a hand, begins shortly after they become married. Aylmer is fixated with his wife Georgiana’s perfection; he believes that in order for him to experience perfect love, he must have a perfect woman to love. His obsession gradually becomes Georgiana’s obsession at which point she becomes so distraught that she tells Aylmer “Remove this dreadful hand, or take my wretched life”. Aylmer sits down and tells his wife that there may be risk involved but he is confident that he shall remove the mark and his beautiful bride will be perfect in every way. He sets up comfortable surroundings for his wife described as “beautiful apartments, not unfit to be the secluded abode of a lovely woman”. After the alchemist attempts and fails numerous methods for removing the mark from his wife he develops a “perfect elixir” that will without a doubt cure her and make her completely perfect. He administers this elixir and to his great delight sees the cursed hand start to fade and disappear; only to have his wife tell him “Aylmer-dearest Aylmer-I am dying!”

Georgiana achieved perfection in Aylmer’s eyes in her dying moments; so did he Aylmer achieve what he set out to accomplish? I believe he did. Aylmer was a man who loved his work; he loved science more than he could ever love any human being. He was a man riddled with his inadequacies and imperfections, and as a result of his low view of himself, he demanded perfection in his wife. This is exhibited when Georgiana is reading out of his ledger which is described as a “sad confession, and continual exemplification, of the short-comings of the composite man”. Aylmer was a self serving individual whose only goal is to make his wife perfect for his own sake or perhaps for science’s sake. All these things being true; I do believe he loved Georgiana, and in his own bizarre way he wanted her to be perfect for her sake, because he believed that she deserved no less. In his quest for her perfection (which is impossible in the purely material sense) he destroyed her.

Aylmer’s wife Georgiana was at first a happy woman; married to someone she believed to be a great man, until one day her husband tells her that the mark upon her cheek might be removed. This of course is the beginning of her as well as her husband’s obsession with removing her one imperfection. The first thing that stuck out in my mind about Georgiana was her undying love, loyalty and desire to please her husband. This was very much a mark of the time. The fact that she would rather die than meet his disapproval I found significant. She seemed to me, to be the ultimate exemplification of love and unselfishness, to an insane level, which is exhibited in the line “You have aimed loftily! – You have done nobly! Do not repent, that, with so high and pure a feeling, you have rejected the best earth could offer.” Georgiana does not feel ill towards her husband because she believes his feelings to be those of pure love.

The Birthmark touches on similar themes as Marry Shelly’s Frankenstein in the idea that humans can possess a supernatural power to undo and make perfect what is imperfect. Aylmer does not believe in God or the natural laws he created, which is obvious by his belief in man’s ultimate control over nature. God created man as a part of nature and we are not above nature but integrated with it. Just as today we are fighting the ethical issues of an increased understanding of science versus what we know to be natural law. Hawthorne’s story The Birth Mark is just as relevant today as it was when written in 1843 if not more so. Today we are struggling with issues such as cloning, stem cell research and other aspects of science that seem in contradiction with God’s and nature’s laws. If confronted with the modern day issues we now face Hawthorne’s opinions would probably be the same as he has set forth in this short story; that when man tries to accomplish what he was not intended to accomplish disaster will be the ultimate result. The hand was not only a birthmark but an integral part of Georgiana’s soul, and removing this mark in the quest for perfection was her demise.

Hawthorne is telling us that humanity is imperfect, there is no perfection in the physical sense, and the only way to achieve perfection is through the spirit in death. The Christian parallel is clear here; none of us are perfect and the only way to become perfect is to become one with God, in death, which results in our going to heaven. This goes back to what makes us who we are; we are not pure flesh and blood, our psyches and our true selves go so much further beyond that.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story The Birth Mark touches on philosophical and ethical issues valid in his time, as well as ours. His work makes us think about what is perfection and is it desirable in the physical state. In the end we discover that if we overstep our bounds and try to make perfect that which is imperfect, death will be the final result, for only in death through God, can we achieve perfection.

Bob Dylan is an iconic singer-songwriter who helped to make America stand up and think about the music they were listening to throughout the last four decades. He is a bard and storyteller of American culture using the guitar, harmonica, and piano as his tools of trade. Known for his nasal-voice, Dylan actually strived for that by emulating an early influence in Woody Guthrie. Bob Dylan has written hundreds of songs over the past 45+ years. While this list could be done over and over, my favorite five are below.

1. Masters of War: The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (1963) Arguably one of Bob Dylan’s greatest social commentaries, Masters of War has an endless appeal because it can be used for any time. Dylan has claimed that this song is not an anti-war song more than it is a pro-pacifism song. When he wrote the song, he was referring to Eisenhower’s “military-industrial complex”. The song is based off of an old English folk song from the late medieval ages called, Nottamun Town. Dylan picked up from popular tune in Appalachia and changed the lyrics to fit his own sound.

2. Desolation Row: Highway 61 Revisited (1965) This song, coming in at more than 11 minutes, was the last track on this album and the only one to not to feature an electric guitar. Dylan states that this song is a minstrel song fashioned after the carnival singers in blackface that he had seen. The lyrics provide a warning to people that society is heading towards Armageddon at the height of the Cold War. The title of the song is a mish-mash of two counterculture favorite novels: Desolation Angels (Jack Kerouac) and Cannery Row (John Steinbeck). Although, it has also been referenced that Dylan took T.S. Eliot’s (mentioned in the song) The Waste Land as an inspiration. It includes religious, popular culture and Shakespearian references to explain the madness of America in the mid-sixties.

3. Subterranean Homesick Blues: Bringing It All Back Home (1965) This was Dylan’s first top 40 Billboard Hit (#39) and one of his first electric guitar songs. It seems like Dylan was obsessed with Jack Kerouac during 1964 and 1965, since this song probably takes its name from Kerouac’s 1958 novel, The Subterraneans, about the Beat culture in New York City. The song is interesting in the fact that it shows how some youth were joining the emerging counterculture while others were following the establishment in altering verses, yet makes them realize at the end that they are all in the same boat.

4. Like A Rolling Stone: Single (1965) One of Bob Dylan’s most recognizable songs, was first released as a single and then put onto the album Highway 61 Revisited. Of all of his songs, this one cemented his place in the popular music world moving him beyond his folksy roots. The basis of this song came from a short story Dylan had written. The song is about class division of a rich woman and a poor man (”Napoleon in rags”) who have each fallen from the graces of upper society because they failed to see what was going on around him. Dylan is explaining that if you aren’t aware of your surroundings, you too, can fall off your high horse into destruction.

5. Visions of Johanna: Blonde on Blonde (1966) The originally title of this song was, Seems Like A Freeze Out, and was probably a reference to Joan Baez, who Dylan was dating at the time. The lyrics seem to be somewhat autobiographical of Dylan’s life in entering New York City and his relationships there. The “visions” are related in lyrical form as wisp-like memories go through the singer’s mind as he is remembering her.
