Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.
[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].
THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY
TRANSMOGRIFICATION
The Transformation is also literally physical (Transmogrification). The Hero is physically different at the end of the movie. The change is often symbolically represented by disfigurement and / or the appearance of blood.
In The Godfather (1972), Capt. McCluskey punches Michael in the face, triggering the facial disfigurement and consequent change. The healing represents Michael?s Transmogrification.
In Brokeback Mountain (2005), Jake and Ennis fight on the hilltop and both are bloodied.
In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Clyde is bloodied in a fight with the shopkeeper.
The Hero?s Transformation and Transmogrification are incremental. They can be traced back to the beginning of a story (Foreshadow of the Call) and do not necessarily end until the Mastery of the Two Worlds and Selves (the Old and New Worlds and Self).

One aspect of the Belly of the Whale is this: having undergone the changes in the First Threshold, the Hero et al must now confront what they must do, what they will become. They msut show that they have evolved from the earlier Fish out of Water state.: In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), both rob the bank proper this time.
*****Hero Confident*****
Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the Master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final Conflict (a metaphor for this stage) follows a distinct process. Though the Hero is often perceived to be weak, he himself is confident – he (or she) has, after all, gained the required Expansion of Consciousness. In Straw Dogs (1971), David tells Amy to go to bed…”…I can handle this…..”
