Carpal tunnel pain and symptoms always have a cause.  ALL pain does.  Pain doesn’t happen without a reason. A “symptom” is numbness, burning, tingling or pain.  Any kind of discomfort is a symptom.  Symptoms call your attention to the fact that something is not right.

Poor posture is a primary and common cause of many pain symptoms including those in your hand, arm and wrist.  But, poor posture is commonly overlooked as a cause of pain.

When you collapse forward (which is also called “forward head” posture) the nerves that pass near your collar bone get compressed.  These are the nerves that supply your hand and arm with sensation.  The nerves don’t like having pressure on them and so they cause symptoms in and around your carpal tunnel area.

Poor posture can cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in another way, too.  When muscles and other soft tissues (not bones) get stretched or overworked, they can develop spots that “fire” elsewhere.  This means that muscles in your back and chest can develop “trigger points” that cause pain in your–you guessed it–hand, wrist and arm.

How do you know whether your posture is poor or good?

Here’s one way:  Stand up and let your arms drop to where they normally would.  Look down at your thumbs.  If they are pointed toward each other, that means the muscles in your chest are tight.  They have shortened and are probably pulling you forward and down.

What can you do to correct poor posture?

There are two parts to this:

(1)  Stretch, relax or loosen the short, tight muscles in the front of your body.

(2) Strengthen the weak muscles in the back of your body.

How did you start to collapse?

You used to have strong, straight posture.  Almost every one of us did when we were small children.  But then, we stopped using ALL of our muscles.  We sat in furniture that didn’t fit us.  We began to develop faulty habits of sitting or using our body incorrectly.

You used to have perfect posture and you can again.  Your body is very smart and wants to be well.  It just needs a little help from you.  By educating yourself, you can discover what you need to do to get your straight, strong body back.

When you have a strong back, the shorter, tighter muscles in the front of your body won’t always be able to win the tug-of-war and pull you forward.  When your posture is more upright, you will have less pain in your hands, wrists and arms (and everywhere else, too.)

Having a strong back will help you get carpal tunnel pain relief.
